THE EXHIBITION
The exhibition "Milos: Alternative architectural landscapes" concerns the presentation of three architectural studies that process remarkable landscapes of the island of Milos, of remarkable natural and industrial heritage. The event will take place at the recently renovated Bomb shelters in the port of Adamas, and will last three months with the opening scheduled for Saturday, June 19th.
Having the vision to protect and promote the island in a prosperous way in the international tourist and cultural map, the three studies present large-scale projects, in places of special geological interest, in dead mines and barren places, that will utilize the existing industrial shell, and will revive the activity there, aiming the development of the local economy. A common denominator is the shift of the local economy to alternative tourism, through promoting the original roots of the place and local economic activities.
PROJECTS
The three studies deal with the planning of the future tourist development of the island, with a hypertopic character that will focus on its nature and culture. The utilization of the thermal resources of the island, created the vision of Loutropolis EN.AL.IA. which develops a network of thermal springs, with variety both in form (clay therapy, steam therapy, thermal baths, sea therapy) and temperature. At the end of the network, the Revival of the Vani mine is planned, a dead mine, with the Vani rock being a landmark for the island. The intervention in the landscape is done in order to create a multi-space that makes the place a museum of itself and at the same time to host cultural and tourist activities. The former mining activity of the island is also mentioned in the last part of the exhibition where the well-known Sulfur Mines are restored and reused, including the new program of the winery. An example of how a local economic activity becomes a pole of attraction for alternative tourism.
