The Keli Hotel project is a concept that incorporates design, sustainability, wellness, food and hospitality to create a new precedent for the island of Serifos and a destination with longevity, integrity and purpose. The architecture supports this vision by creating sustainable spaces that inspire connection, reflect tradition and fully integrate into the surroundings.
The 2,000 sqm hotel is built on a 8.5 plot in Kalo Ampeli. By the island’s standards, this is a large-scale project, so our basic aim was to moderately intervene in the land and to fully integrate the architecture into the site. We largely used natural building materials, including local stone from the island, wicker logs and oxidized metal beams.
The roofs of the rooms are designed as green roofs that serve to preserve energy consumption and become extensions of the landscape. The traditional cell-like structures (keli) of Serifos were the inspiration and starting point for the composition and the room unit design. In plan, the free-standing rooms are rectangular in form, surrounded by an enclosed courtyard and featuring a planted rooftop. Four cell types are placed vertically to the land’s slope, unrolling horizontally.
The arrangement of the modules (cells) re-inscribes its course on the foot of the hill with a highly scattered trace, forming a new artificial altimeter curve. The composition's horizontal design is interrupted by vertical excursions, the towers, which house a fifth type of two-storied apartment.
The communal living areas are located in a central 3-level building, inclusive of a lobby, restaurant, bar and infinity pool, as well as a library, concept store, outdoor theater and performance space, yoga area, massage rooms, gym and spa. These spaces are fully accessible from the outside allowing for free movement and the interconnection of all communal areas.
The project strives to celebrate the renowned beauty, culture and history of Serifos and to build a community that come to enjoy all the simple luxuries that the Keli Hotel Project and the island have to offer.
