Mykonos Earth Suites is a boutique hotel, located at ‘Megali Ammos’ area of Mykonos island. Two core elements of the Cycladic traditional architecture inspired the interior design approach.
Arches represent a central element of the Cycladic architectural vocabulary. Those rigid forms, originally conceived as structural element, are nowadays a bold visual reference of Aegean architecture.
The arch is employed as an operative experiment, where a familiar form is revisited through contemporary construction techniques. Various arch-based elements are used as openings, furniture and passages in a progressive approach to standard hotel-room components.
In the rooms of this typology, arches are used as opening that are a direct reference to the local Cycladic architecture. The soft transitions of the walls to the floor, furtherly contribute to the minimal ambient that we come across in local architecture. In order to contradict the minimal white interiors, natural oak is used for beds, which follow a stricter design approach. The strong geometry of the beds is orientated towards the sea, emphasising the uninterrupted views. Arches are also used on the upper part of the door, combined with vertical louvers.
The second design principle is also rooted on the Cycladic tradition. Built-in elements have been long used in the configuration of spatial qualities on the vernacular architecture.
Treated as a multidimensional surface, the floor creates an intricate topography that emphasizes the sense of continuity in the space. This topography integrates the bed, bathroom sinks and lounge area of a standard hotel room, simultaneously highlighting the flowing relief of the open plan layout.
For this typology, beds are either built in, or constructed with wide wooden slabs in dark live wood edge. The same type of wood is used on custom made closets to create a powerful interplay with the white walls. On the ceiling, wooden beams are added, to create a visual continuity with the wooden canopy that extends to the private balcony.
The reception area follows the same minimal approach. Arch elements are applied to the wooden window frames, the reception desk and the seating area. Moreover, arches are used again as decorative and functional opening that separates the office area. Smooth finishes are combined with rough rock-like finishes to enhance the visual complexity.
In the exterior, there is the bar and restaurant facilities, located next to the main pool. The bar and the wooden pool-beds were designed and custom-made, following the design principals of the interior, that showcase the minimal interiors and the privileged sea views to the sunset.
Throughout the hotel, the materials approach is a direct reference to the ample use of white in the Cycladic islands. Screed concrete in white, natural wood and stone, comprise the main material selection, whilst carefully selected elements in gold tones add a touch of discreet elegance.
