DESCRIPTION

The complex was constructed with load-bearing masonry, using grey stone from local quarries. Stonemasonry is mostly visible on the interior spaces. An EITCS system was implemented on the stonewalls, in order to provide thermal comfort to the rooms and protect the guests from the heat of southern Crete. The external finish, white in colour and applied with a rough technique simulates the style of traditional local buildings. Interior partition walls are made with DCT.

In outdoor spaces, the presence of natural materials is eminent. Door and window frames are made of wood (dark red meranti) in accordance with the settlement’s traditional style. Wood is also used in pergolas (chestnut tree) as well as sunshades and porch partitions (chaste tree). Hardscape consists mostly of surfaces cobbled with the same local stone, both in rough shape and delicate patterns, as in the middle of the square. These surfaces are complemented with elements made of polished concrete, such as the fountain, outdoor stairs and walls of flowerbeds guiding the guests from the main entrance to the main yard and the reception. Use of metal is limited to details of the fountain and its surroundings, as well as the unadorned railings.

Interior spaces are designed to be both minimal and welcoming. Walls are painted in a light off-white tone and built-in furniture is finished with cement plaster of the same colour, in order to form a plain background. Suspended white ceilings with recessed spotlights and inconspicuous HVAC diffusers add to this setting. Interior floors are laid with large cement tiles of light grey colour. Natural materials in the rest of the room come in contrast to the minimal background.

Selected walls have their stonemasonry exposed, while furniture matches old-school and contemporary elements. Beds, headboards, closets, desks, mirrors and mini-bar furniture are made of solid knotted oak wood in its natural tone, mixing clean-cut lines with traditional grooves. Their faces are laid with wicker in two different patterns. Details of brass and black on the lighting fixtures and the door handles complete the synthesis. Bathroom floor and walls are laid with the same grey tiles, creating a seamless background for the sanitary ware and taps.
