In the area of Ialyssos, the foundations of an old complex of furnished apartments are converted into a contemporary four-star hotel unit.
The goal of the design was to highlight the creation of an alternative hospitality space with a laid-back atmosphere and to recast it into an experience of a new-era visitor. This unique philosophy acquires the features of a settlement. The analysis was focused on this approach and specifies the introverted character of the design.
The site is characterized by a gentle relief, the olive clusters across the surface that were conserved, the visual relationship with the opposing hill and the bordering woodland, which was preserved and highlighted with lighting.
The entrance of the complex was set through the east side. Through a freely designed course, the guest is presented to the façade of the main building with the large openings which facilitates the reception area and the central restaurant. On either side of the main building, there are two three-story strip-shaped buildings where the hotel rooms with private balconies and the suites with private jacuzzies are located. Bungalows with private yards, sharing pools and private jacuzzies based on the room type, were developed on the south side of the land.
The concrete pathways lead to the west side of the hotel where the main pool, DJ booth and bar facilities are designed to organize activities for the vacationers and create a carefree atmosphere. This is also proven by social media, where since the first day of operation of the hotel there are dozens of photos and reviews from their guests.
Additionally, in the underground level are the shared functions that serve the current requirements of a four-star hotel.
The architects were asked to create an existing building with 52 furnished apartments into 90 modern hotel rooms with all amenities. All rooms have been equipped with two single beds 90 cm., wooden bedside tables Φ40, desk (min. 250 cm.), desk chair, wardrobe (min. 150 cm.), luggage rack (min. 150cm.) and full-length mirror (80*160cm), except from the triple rooms which include a sofa - bed and coffee table. All room types were designed with a large bathroom taking into account the existing light fixtures for the electromechanical installations. Each bathroom has a large sink counter (min. 150 cm.) and a large shower (min. 90*160 cm.).
The succession of hard and soft materials such as stone, wood, cement, steel, earth tones as well as the variety of textures, contributed in an absolutely harmonic design in relation to the natural landscape. Tiles of the same color and texture were used throughout the whole project. Wood and steel were combined to craft pergolas and railings of the rooms and public spaces, while fences were constructed using diverse local stone, which were already present on the plot. The furniture and ornaments chosen consisted of simple and clean lines.
Wood was used as the main material for the formation of exterior spaces, interiors and the mobile equipment. Beds, sofas and curtains all in linen fabric and earth tones, woven cane lamps and handmade mats complete the project giving it a harmonic bohemian breath.
Particular attention way paid to the outdoor spaces, which combine large and smaller, more private open spaces. As far planting is concerned, it mainly consists of local xerophytic trees and shrubs that thrive in the island’s climate.
Cooks Club’s Ialysos philosophy relies on natural materials, colors and as a whole is characterized as a form of luxury that cooperates with nature.
COMPLETION TIME
The project was studied from the engineering team of the MCh design & constructions company on January 2021 with the most important goal of the design being the creation of a modern hotel unit that would open its gates to be fully operational on May 1, 2022. The engineering team of MCh design & constructions also took over the full supervision and Project Management of the project.
The construction of the project begun in September 2021 and it was finalized withing the time scheduled. The stages of its preparation included the works of removals, reinforcements of the static carrier, metal interventions for the modernization of the facades and finally all the remaining building works required for completion of the project. To successfully achieve the time & financial planning, the engineering team had implemented a complete application study, which allowed all the materials & equipment to be ordered before the beginning of construction. The application study and the standardization achieved through it, helped in executing bulk orders and in reaching economically beneficial agreements between the owners and the suppliers.
Pre-fabricated elements were an important aspect the design took advantage of. The hotel was supplied with pre-fabricated the bathroom sinks, the bolted metal constructions on the extensions, the facades and reinforcements, which gave us a particularly favorable result for the economy, quality and efficient time planning of the project. The project was funded by the owners’ resources, while the project was rewarded with a very high rating in the Development Law. The implementation cost of the project is calculated at € 4,000,000.00 excluding VAT, significantly lower that the initial cost estimations.
