Whispering Ampeli Kefallonia is a complex of seven earth-sheltered rental residences in Assos, Kefalonia, conceived as the revival and contemporary reinhabitation of a former agricultural landscape.
The building and its outdoor spaces form a continuous, flowing whole. A key design principle is to minimise intervention in the natural topography and allow the architecture to integrate gently into the terrain. An elongated, curved structure follows the natural contours, exposing only its main façade towards Assos and the vast Ionian Sea, where the view meets the setting sun each day.
Terraces, dry-stone walls, vines, planted roofs and water form a continuous productive landscape, while the colour palette of the dividing walls — indigo, ochre and terracotta — subtly recalls the traditional colours of the Ionian islands. The vineyard is reintroduced as an active element of the site, supporting small-scale wine production.
Architecture ultimately transforms the vineyard terrace into a place to inhabit: people live within the vineyard, becoming part of the landscape rather than dominating it.
