Taf Coffee
Rukira - Kenya
Rukira wet mill was first built in1979, in the heart of Nyeri County in Central Keneya. It is situated in Rukira Village. The wet mill processes cherries from more than 670 smallholder farmers in the surrounding Nyeri highlands, who combine their cherries at the mill. The region has cool temperatures and red volcanic soils rich in phosphorus, making it ideal conditions for growing coffee.
The Nyeri region is traditionally known as "the heart of Kenya".
Most of the coffees from Nyeri develop and mature slowly, producing extra-hard beans. Farmers predominately grow the SL28 and SL34 varietals, combing them together before transporting them to Rukira wet mill.
Farmers picking of only red cherries. Cherries are floated and wet fermented for 12-18 hours in concrete tanks under shade. After fermentation is complete, coffee is thoroughly washed in concrete channels to remove any remaining mucilage.
