In an introverted plot of 380 m2, we were asked to design a residence for a family of four, extending an existing building of 80 m2, as well as of the outdoor space and a pool. Preserving only the bearing structure of the existing building and using it as a connecting link of the new spaces, we proposed three types of addition, using the same design vocabulary. A solid volume is placed on the northwest side of the plot, creating the master bedroom and defining the area of the pool and the basic outdoor space of the house, southeast. The next addition is made on the roof of the existing building, creating an extra, isolated bedroom with its own bathroom.

Therefore, the main idea for this house transformation, is the creation of a metal structure in contact with the existing building, as an expansion of the main living areas of the house. This structure expands and creates a pergola of 85 m2, as an element of integration between indoor and outdoor space, while enlarges the spaces of the house, both visually and substantially.

The pergola is also playing a bioclimatic role, protecting the house from the intense south sun heat, while creates spaces of different qualities beneath it: semi-outdoor spaces as a shelter of weather conditions, spaces that offer shade during the summer, without preventing sunlight from entering the house during the winter, spaces where the pergola is covered by climbing plants and spaces which allow the north-south permeability.
