The Echo of the Sea | Frangokastelo
Overlooking the rugged peninsulas of southern Crete, an existing structure is transformed into a hospitality residence accommodating 4 to 6 guests. The property, spanning 1.8 acres, includes the main building and its outbuildings, with direct access to the beach. The area remains largely undeveloped, with the prominent landmark of the Frangokastello fortress dominating the landscape.
Maintaining the existing building's footprint, the design redefines the living and kitchen areas, focusing on the creation of two private spaces with uninterrupted sea views. The relationship between the interior and exterior spaces is of paramount importance, prompting a design approach that ensures a smooth transition between the two. This is achieved through the use of arches, a recurring architectural element that shapes the building's façades. Additionally, the design references the fortress architecture of the nearby area, particularly on the northern façade, where a sense of introversion and privacy is established. Small openings evoke the appearance of battlements, while the sloping walls are inspired by the Venetian "scarpo" technique. The composition of the central volume is completed with the addition of a perforated, hanging pergola on the building's southern side.
Outbuildings to the east and west of the main structure are incorporated into the overall design. To the west, a 15-square-meter space is converted into a guest room with a private bathroom. Two parallel walls with arched openings are introduced to enhance privacy while facilitating a gentle transition to the outdoors. This intervention increases the residence's capacity to accommodate up to 8 guests.
To the east, existing makeshift structures and a rudimentary barbecue area are reconfigured into a small storage room and an outdoor kitchen with a built-in BBQ. Extending from this area, a covered outdoor seating space is created, unified by a waterproof pergola that visually connects the different functional zones. The outdoor living area stretches along the northern boundary wall, serving as a vital communal space. Here, too, arches framed by perforated bricks direct the gaze toward the beach.
Particular attention is given to the landscape design, with the existing well, located to the east of the main volume, serving as a focal point. Water becomes a dominant element through the introduction of a pool and a jacuzzi, paying homage to the now-dry well. The landscaping includes curved stone walls, no higher than 45 cm, which define more private areas. Planting arrangements introduce varying heights to enhance privacy, while local aromatic herbs and native flora are interspersed throughout the site.
The selection of materials prioritizes natural resources. Floor surfaces feature marble and locally sourced stone, while pergolas and window frames are crafted from durable natural wood, selected for its resilience to coastal conditions.
